

Many municipalities in the GTA have established their own by-laws in order to protect their urban forests. Below are examples of tree related regulations. Please consult your municipality or one of our specialists to further discuss tree protection by-laws.
Toronto Private Tree By-Law:
A permit is required to remove or injure any tree on private property that is over 30cm DBH
(diameter at breast height). An arborist report is required for a permit application.
Richmond Hill Private Tree By-Law:
A permit is required to remove or injure any tree on private property that is over 20cm DBH
(diameter at breast height). An arborist report is required for a permit application.
Vaughan Private Tree By-Law:
A permit is required to remove or injure any tree on private property that is over 20 cm DBH
(diameter at breast height). Multi-stemmed trees must be measured by adding the DHB of the three largest stems. An arborist report is required for a permit application.
Markham Private Tree By-Law:
A permit is required to remove or injure any tree on private property that is over 20 cm DBH
(diameter at breast height). ). Multi-stemmed trees must be measured by adding the DHB of the three
largest stems. An arborist report is not required for a permit application.
Mississauga Private Tree By-Law:
A permit is not required for up to two trees with a diameter greater than 15cm per calendar year.
However, a permit is required for 3 or more dead, dying, or hazardous trees over 15cm
in diameter per calendar year. An arborist report is required for a permit application.
